A British family, seeking a better work-life balance, made a significant move from the UK to Zimbabwe, settling in Harare. Natalie Furk, 35, and her husband, James, 37, decided to relocate to James’ childhood home in March 2024. Natalie, who had a successful bakery business, was working long hours, and James was fully occupied in the automotive industry back in the UK.
They sold their four-bedroom property in Northamptonshire for £500,000 in December 2023 and shipped their belongings to Zimbabwe in a 40ft container costing £8,000. The couple, along with their two children, Isabella, nine, and Harvey, seven, embraced their new life in Harare, where they now enjoy a higher standard of living. Their children attend private schools at an annual cost of £8,750 each.
Natalie, originally from Leicester, expressed that the move provided them with more quality time as a family. She highlighted the organic lifestyle in Zimbabwe, the abundance of free time due to hired staff for household tasks, and the fresh, chemical-free food they now enjoy. The family has transitioned smoothly into their new home, residing in a property owned by James’ mother, Lynn, 67.
With reduced utility costs, including water bills at £20 and electricity from solar panels, their overall expenses have significantly decreased compared to the UK. Healthcare costs are also lower in Zimbabwe, with medical aid for the entire family priced at £457.33 per month.
Despite initial challenges and homesickness, Natalie stated that she now feels at home in Zimbabwe after a year of adjustment. The children have adapted to the local schooling system, which includes compulsory after-school sports and a different daily schedule compared to the UK.
The family’s living costs in Zimbabwe are notably lower than in the UK, with eliminated mortgage payments and reduced bills. They have embraced the local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle, finding contentment in their decision to make the move for a more fulfilling and balanced life.
