“Students Urged: Use Condoms in Freshers Week Amid High STI Rates”

Must Read

Students are advised to use condoms during Freshers Week due to the persistent high rates of a significant STI, as shown in our map illustrating the spike in infections in various locations. Despite a recent decrease in gonorrhoea rates, the infection remains prevalent, prompting the UK Health Security Agency to caution against unprotected sexual activity.

Health professionals note that STIs are gradually decreasing but emphasize the importance of understanding the infection risks, especially prevalent among individuals aged 15 to 24. In England, there were 71,802 reported cases of gonorrhoea last year, marking a doubling compared to a decade ago and a 167% increase from 2012.

The infection rate for gonorrhoea was 124.5 per 100,000 people in 2024, representing a substantial risk. Although this rate has declined from the previous year’s peak, it remains historically high. Notably, areas like London exhibit a higher risk of contracting gonorrhoea.

In London, Lambeth recorded 3,516 gonorrhoea cases, translating to 1,113.7 infections per 100,000 individuals, with all fifteen areas with the highest infection rates located in the city. Beyond London, cities like Manchester, Brighton, Salford, Liverpool, and Nottingham also showed elevated infection risks.

Dr. Hamish Mohammed from UKHSA advises students to prioritize safe sex practices to avoid STIs, emphasizing the effectiveness of condom use. He stresses the importance of getting tested if symptoms arise, as testing is free, confidential, and crucial for maintaining good health.

Gonorrhoea, an ancient STI mentioned in historical records and texts, has evolved over time in its descriptions, symptoms, and treatments. The disease, also known as “the clap,” can lead to severe complications if left untreated, underscoring the necessity of preventive measures and regular testing to safeguard individuals’ health.
