Michelle Tolley was elated when she received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work, but little did she know that another surprise awaited her. The 60-year-old, who humorously refers to herself as “59 plus one,” has been a dedicated campaigner seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow activists Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain ceremony. While attending the event, Michelle witnessed midwife Agnes Nisbett being awarded a cruise holiday by P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the awards. To her astonishment, it was announced that all winners of the 2024 awards would also receive the same prize.
Having endured years of health struggles and advocating for fellow victims, the unexpected gift of a cruise holiday was a welcome respite for Michelle. Infected with hepatitis C during a blood transfusion after giving birth in 1987, she battled years of sickness before receiving a proper diagnosis and undergoing treatment.
Determined to turn her anger into positive action, Michelle established support groups for affected individuals, collaborated with the Hepatitis C Trust, and provided testimony at the government inquiry. After decades of hard work, the opportunity for a relaxing vacation was a delightful surprise, especially since Michelle and her husband Dean had not traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984.
Their chosen destination for a Canary Islands cruise in May coincided with their 40th wedding anniversary. Michelle had contemplated renewing their vows during the trip and was pleasantly surprised when P&O Cruises arranged a vow renewal ceremony for them onboard Ventura. The cruise experience was a stark contrast to Michelle’s childhood sailing memory and left her overwhelmed with joy.
During the cruise, Michelle and Dean indulged in the ship’s amenities, relishing the delicious cuisine, onboard entertainment, shopping, and sightseeing opportunities. Exploring Madeira and the Canary Islands further enriched their holiday experience, from admiring banana trees in Madeira to taking a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas.
Their adventures continued with a coach and river cruise in Lisbon before heading back home. Enthralled by their cruise vacation, Michelle and Dean are eager to embark on similar journeys in the future. Michelle lauded the exceptional treatment they received onboard, praising the staff and facilities. Encouraging others to try a cruise holiday, she emphasized the fantastic amenities and the warm hospitality extended by all.
