Paul, a successful entrepreneur, encountered severe financial difficulties due to serious health problems and the end of his marriage, which drastically altered his life.
Having previously worked as a headhunter in Hertfordshire, Paul underwent extensive heart surgery following a sudden collapse near a lake in 2012. His recovery was complicated by a non-healing chest wound and a subsequent stroke that left half of his body paralyzed.
With his inability to continue working, Paul had to resort to claiming Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments (PIP) after separating from his spouse. However, his financial situation deteriorated significantly, leading his bank to initiate repossession proceedings for his specially adapted home that accommodates his disabilities.

Reflecting on his journey, Paul shared with The Mirror: “I transitioned from running a successful business to experiencing a life-threatening event by the lake in Milton Keynes.
“After being resuscitated and undergoing major heart surgery to replace an aortic valve, my recovery was disrupted by a poorly healing wound and a subsequent stroke.”
“The stroke left me with half of my body incapacitated, lacking sensation in my left side.”
Although the repossession process is ongoing, Paul shared his experience after receiving assistance from the Money and Pensions Service, who are assisting him in navigating his financial challenges. He encourages others to openly discuss financial matters without fear.
He stated: “My residence has been customized to accommodate my needs. I have been making payments from my PIP and Universal Credit as much as possible. Despite the challenges, I have kept my bank informed.”
“When my bank initiated repossession proceedings, I reached out to MoneyHelper to explore my options. They connected me with the right resources, offering non-judgmental assistance in a critical situation. Following the consultation, I felt empowered, knowledgeable about my choices, and the next steps to take.”
