Armed forces personnel and veterans are set to receive priority access to housing developments on Ministry of Defence land, as announced by the Government. Plans are in place for up to 100,000 properties to be constructed on repurposed defence sites. Defense Secretary John Healey will introduce the ‘Forces First’ initiative at the Labour Party Conference, emphasizing the need to address the inadequate housing conditions that have contributed to a retention crisis within the military.
During a visit to a shipyard in Merseyside, Healey expressed concern over the substandard housing faced by military personnel and their families, attributing it to declining morale and recruitment challenges. He stressed the urgency of improving housing conditions for the armed forces to boost retention rates. The Labour Party aims to promote home ownership among personnel and veterans, ensuring access to quality, affordable housing. The Government has committed £1.5 billion by 2029 to enhance military housing standards.
In his address at the conference, Healey is expected to criticize the Conservatives for neglecting Armed Forces housing, leading to a decline in morale and recruitment numbers. He highlighted Labour’s efforts to revitalize military housing and reiterated the commitment to accelerate housing construction on Defence land for the benefit of service members and civilian families nationwide.
Recent statistics revealed a significant exodus of personnel from the regular forces during the Tories’ tenure, with a notable drop in recruitment figures over the years. Healey’s remarks came following a visit to the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, where he celebrated a major warship export deal with Norway. The deal is expected to support hundreds of skilled jobs in Merseyside and inject billions into the British economy.
The Ministry of Defence’s substantial expenditure with businesses in the northwest region has played a vital role in supporting over 20,000 jobs. Healey emphasized the economic impact of the warship deal with Norway, underscoring the job security it provides and the positive outlook for employment opportunities in shipbuilding.
