The recent downfall of Andrew Mounbatten Windsor, from a highly esteemed royal figure to a discredited former duke, has highlighted the contrasting treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Buckingham Palace made a significant decision in response to mounting public concerns regarding Andrew’s alleged sexual assault accusations and association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. They revealed that King Charles had initiated the legal process to formally strip Andrew of his royal titles and relocate him from Royal Lodge.
Although Andrew had already announced his willingness to relinquish his titles, the King took the additional step of officially revoking them. Consequently, Andrew will be vacating Royal Lodge, where he had a secure 75-year lease, to reside at Sandringham, the monarch’s private estate. Despite stepping back from royal duties six years ago, it was not until early 2022 that Andrew was stripped of his royal patronages, honorary military roles, and police protection following a civil lawsuit in the US filed by Virginia Giuffre.
In contrast, when Harry and Meghan chose to cease their royal responsibilities, their publicly-funded security was promptly withdrawn. In 2023, after Harry’s revealing memoir “Spare” shed light on the internal issues within the House of Windsor, the couple was asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage. This occurred despite reports of them prepaying rent and reimbursing the Sovereign Grant for property renovations undertaken during their tenure as working royals.
Royal expert Afua Acheampong-Hagan expressed concerns about the differential treatment, noting that Andrew had received more protection over the years compared to Harry and Meghan. She highlighted the disparity in support, citing Andrew’s privileged treatment and the challenges faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Meghan had previously disclosed her struggles with the pressures of royal life, including mental health issues, both in a documentary and during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Harry later mentioned in his memoir that the disparity in security treatment between him and Andrew was evident, despite Andrew’s involvement in a scandal. The Duke of Sussex emphasized the unequal treatment they faced, particularly in the context of security provision.
