“UK Treasury Denies Tax Exemption for Elderly Armed Forces’ Pensions”

Must Read

His Majesty’s Treasury has released a significant update in response to a campaign urging the elimination of pension tax for elderly members of the armed forces. The petition, now signed by over 27,000 individuals, deems this tax unjust and advocates for its removal for armed forces personnel aged 60 and above to ensure fairness.

Typically, withdrawals from pension savings are subject to taxation similar to employment income or other earnings. Individuals usually do not pay tax if their total annual income is below the Personal Allowance threshold, which currently stands at £12,570.

While members of the Armed Forces Pension Scheme enjoy various benefits such as Early Departure Payments, tax-free lump sums, inflation-linked pension increments, and exemption from monthly salary contributions, the government, though appreciative of their service, does not intend to make their pension tax-free at age 60 presently.

In a statement issued on September 15, the Treasury expressed gratitude for the armed forces’ service but confirmed no immediate plans to exempt Armed Forces pensions from tax at age 60. The government values ensuring retirees’ dignity through their pension entitlements, especially since Armed Forces Pension Scheme members do not contribute to their pension funds, distinguishing them as the only non-contributory public service pension scheme.

The response clarified that tax treatment of pensions aligns with the taxation of deferred income and applies to payments from all occupational pension schemes. The petition ‘Make the Armed Forces pension tax-free’ has garnered over 27,000 signatures, with potential for parliamentary debate upon reaching 100,000 signatures, aiming to rectify perceived injustices.
