“Brother of Southport Assailant Speaks Out”

Must Read

The brother of Axel Rudakubana has revealed that the mass murderer became increasingly isolated after being expelled from school for attacking a classmate. Dion, the elder sibling of the Southport assailant, expressed deep sorrow for the immense pain caused to numerous individuals.

In a statement presented to the Southport Inquiry, Dion Rudakubana urged a thorough investigation into the potential failures of public agencies in preventing the tragic events. His representative, Jacqueline Carey KC, affirmed his full support for the inquiry’s goal of learning from the tragedy to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Axel Rudakubana, only 17 at the time, carried out a brutal stabbing spree at a Southport venue on July 29, targeting women and girls with a blade purchased online. The attack resulted in the deaths of three young children and left several others injured, along with the organizer and a bystander.

The inquiry learned that Axel, identified as AR during proceedings, had a history of violent behavior, including a prior assault conviction and possession of weapons. Despite multiple warning signs over the years, authorities failed to assess the extent of his danger, leading to the tragic incident.

Dion Rudakubana, a core participant in the inquiry, emphasized the impact of his brother’s expulsion from school on his descent into isolation. Axel’s troubled history, including incidents of violence and weapon possession, raised concerns that were allegedly overlooked by relevant authorities.

The families affected by the attack questioned the role of Axel’s family in ignoring the risks posed by him. The inquiry is focusing on Axel’s interactions with his family, particularly in the days leading up to the attack, and their knowledge of his access to weapons.

Axel Rudakubana was sentenced to life imprisonment for his heinous crimes, with the inquiry aiming to provide a comprehensive account of the events and interactions with state agencies. The chairman of the inquiry pledged to address the families’ concerns and ensure measures are in place to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The initial phase of the inquiry is expected to continue until November, shedding light on the circumstances leading to the tragic incident and the systemic failures that allowed it to occur.
