The Real Living Wage, which is a voluntary minimum wage for employees over 18 working for Living Wage Foundation certified employers, is designed to cover essential living costs such as food, clothing, and household bills. Eland Cables has implemented a significant increase in the hourly rate, raising it by 85p to £13.45 an hour (a 6.7% increase) and by 95p to £14.80 an hour in London (a 6.9% increase), surpassing the statutory minimum wage.
While employers have until May 2026 to adjust to the higher rates, Eland Cables has acted swiftly by introducing the pay rise ahead of schedule. Ben, a 34-year-old father of two from Doncaster and a long-standing employee at Eland Cables, is among the many workers benefiting from the early wage hike. He expressed gratitude for the move, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on his family’s finances, especially as the festive season approaches.

With half of Eland Cables’ workforce performing essential operational roles, including cable cutting, packaging, forklift operation, and site maintenance, the company’s emphasis on fair pay and employee well-being has led to notable successes. Staff retention has risen to 88% annually, sickness absence rates have decreased, and productivity has seen a significant uptick. Eland Cables also prioritizes internal growth opportunities, with examples of employees progressing from entry-level positions to managerial roles.
