Rachel Reeves emphasized today that the current challenges facing Britain are not insurmountable, encouraging the nation to trust in the Labour Party’s strategy. Speaking at a conference in Liverpool, the Chancellor rallied Labour members, urging them to take pride in the party’s accomplishments during its nearly 15 months in power. Reeves highlighted achievements such as establishing breakfast clubs in primary schools, expanding free school meals, a significant increase in NHS funding, and raising wages for millions in the public sector.
Addressing delegates, Reeves acknowledged the difficulties but emphasized the collective achievements, stating, “Not only should we take pride in our victories, but also in the decisions we make and the lives we positively impact.” She highlighted the progress made in the 451 days in office compared to the more than 5,000 days spent in opposition.
While instilling confidence in the party’s ability to tackle challenges, Reeves also cautioned about the upcoming crucial Budget in November. She warned of global economic headwinds and anticipated further economic tests in the months ahead due to the long-term damage inflicted on the economy.
Reeves hinted at a possible tax increase, indicating a shift in the party’s stance on tax policies. Refraining from reiterating previous pledges, she emphasized the need to navigate economic responsibilities carefully. The Chancellor underscored the importance of prudent spending to maintain market confidence and avoid detrimental impacts on the economy.
Moreover, Reeves condemned Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, labeling it as the primary threat to working people. She emphasized the contrast between a Labour government aligned with international allies and a Reform party potentially aligned with Vladimir Putin.
In response to Reeves’s speech, TUC general secretary Paul Nowak praised her commitment to working people but stressed the urgent need for sustained investment in essential sectors post years of Tory austerity. Nowak called for increased contributions from sectors like banks and gambling companies in the upcoming Budget to ensure fair distribution of financial burdens.
Reeves reiterated Labour’s commitment to governance rather than protest, addressing a brief disturbance during her speech by a pro-Gaza demonstrator. She acknowledged the cause while highlighting the government’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine.
