Shabana Mahmood has raised concerns about a growing trend towards ethno-nationalism among some individuals in the UK, veering away from patriotism. The Home Secretary emphasized the need for stricter migration policies to prevent people from being swayed by false assurances from Nigel Farage if Labour fails to take decisive action. She outlined several initiatives to make it more challenging to obtain indefinite leave to remain in the UK, stating that contributing to society will be a prerequisite for residency.
In her address at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Ms. Mahmood highlighted the deep divisions exposed by a march organized by Tommy Robinson in London, with 150,000 attendees. She acknowledged the presence of individuals with extremist views but stressed the broader societal issues at play.
Ms. Mahmood expressed concerns that increasing ethno-nationalistic sentiments could lead to further division if not addressed promptly. She urged a deeper understanding of why some individuals feel marginalized in the country, attributing part of the issue to the impact of high levels of immigration on public trust and confidence.
The Home Secretary announced plans to extend the residency requirement for indefinite leave to remain from five years to ten years and introduce new criteria such as employment, financial contributions, English proficiency, clean criminal records, and community engagement. She emphasized that the ability to stay in the UK should not be automatic and proposed a tiered system based on meeting specific conditions.
Green MP Carla Denyer criticized the Home Secretary’s proposals, labeling them as detached from reality and advocating for more sensible approaches to migration, such as enabling asylum seekers to work. Denyer emphasized the positive contributions of migrants to the economy, crucial sectors like healthcare, and the overall cultural richness they bring to the UK.
Denyer called for a shift in the migration system’s focus from solely reducing numbers to enhancing community integration and support. She proposed empowering asylum seekers to contribute economically and self-sustain, highlighting the need for pragmatic solutions rather than superficial reforms.
