Britons residing in over 50 regions are bracing for a wet and stormy weekend ahead as heavy rainfall lashes the British Isles. The UK is expected to experience widespread downpours over the next two days, with the Met Office warning of potential floods in 51 areas across the country. Residents in these affected locations are advised to prepare emergency flood kits as a precaution.
A yellow weather alert has been issued by the Met Office due to concerns about the stormy conditions leading to flooding, road spray, and significant disruptions to road and rail travel. The warning spans from Scotland in the north to the Midlands and Wales, starting at 9 am today and ending at 6 am on Sunday.
Individuals in the affected regions are urged to take preventive measures. The Met Office recommends assessing the risk of flooding to properties, creating a flood plan, and assembling an emergency flood kit. Planning ahead for potential power cuts by stocking up on essentials like torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack is also advised.
Following a brief spell of warm weather reaching 27°C on Friday, wintry conditions are expected to dominate the weekend. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tom Crabtree from the Met Office anticipates rainfall of 20-30 mm across most areas, with localized totals possibly reaching 60-80 mm in a short timeframe. Strong gusty winds and potential thunderstorms are expected to accompany the rain, heightening the risk of disruptions.
Furthermore, southwest England, western Wales, and parts of the northeast are likely to experience winds exceeding 55 mph, although the exact locations and timings remain uncertain. Continuous monitoring of the situation is underway, with potential additional warnings to be issued as necessary. Staying updated with forecast updates is crucial in the coming days to stay informed about evolving weather conditions.
