Starmer Snubs Putin on Birthday Amid India Visit

Must Read

Keir Starmer has made it clear that he did not extend birthday wishes to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, in contrast to India’s warm greetings. While arriving in Mumbai for discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Starmer emphasized that the UK government will intensify pressure on the Kremlin. This statement coincided with Modi’s expression of well wishes to Putin despite his government’s ongoing purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict.

On the occasion of Putin’s 73rd birthday, Starmer affirmed his stance by stating, “Just to clarify, I have not sent birthday wishes to Putin, and I do not intend to do so. I imagine this does not come as a surprise.” Addressing the issue of energy and the crackdown on Russian energy sources, Starmer highlighted the UK’s focus on the Shadow Fleet as the most effective approach, with the UK leading efforts in collaboration with other nations.

During his visit to India to strengthen ties with Modi’s administration, Starmer pledged to promote British businesses, leading a sizable delegation comprising 125 industry leaders, university heads, and other prominent figures. Notable companies such as Rolls Royce, British Telecom, Diageo, London Stock Exchange, and British Airways, alongside cultural institutions like the British Film Institute and the National Theatre, were part of this delegation. This initiative followed the signing of a trade agreement between Starmer and Modi earlier in the year, projected to contribute £4.8 billion annually to the UK economy.

Looking ahead to the visit, Starmer emphasized the significance of the trade deal with India, viewing it as a springboard for future growth opportunities. With India poised to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028 and trade relations set to become more efficient and cost-effective, Starmer highlighted the unparalleled prospects awaiting engagement. He underscored the importance of supporting British businesses in India, as their success translates to increased choices, opportunities, and employment prospects for the British populace.

The endeavor to attract British firms was underlined in the context of the PM’s acknowledgment of businesses in his Labour conference speech following challenging decisions on taxation in the previous year’s Budget. As Starmer embarked on his journey to India, British Airways announced plans to introduce a third daily flight between Delhi and London Heathrow by 2026. Additionally, connectivity between Manchester and the Indian capital was bolstered with the confirmation of a new route operated by India’s leading airline, IndiGo.
