After finishing your laundry and taking out your towels from the tumble dryer, have you ever felt disappointed to find them lacking their usual softness and instead feeling stiff and rough?
This issue may stem from various factors such as soap residue, limescale buildup, friction in the washing process, and how you dry your towels.
Towels, being highly absorbent, tend to trap soap and fabric softener residues that may not completely rinse off during the wash cycle. Over time, this residue accumulation can lead to reduced absorbency and a harsh texture.
To maintain the softness and comfort of your towels for years to come, experts recommend using white vinegar as a key ingredient in the cleaning process. Michael Bogoyavlenskiy, CEO of Cleaning Express, highlighted that white vinegar is a natural and efficient method to restore the softness of towels.
When washing your towels, add around 100ml of white vinegar to the fabric conditioner compartment or the rinse cycle compartment if available. The vinegar helps break down oil, detergent, and mineral deposits that could be causing the towels to feel stiff.
For severely affected towels, consider soaking them in a mixture of water and 150 to 200ml of white vinegar before washing them. This soaking process helps to eliminate stubborn residues. After soaking, rinse the towels and proceed with a regular wash cycle. The towels will not retain any vinegar smell once they are cleaned and dried.
Experts like Danny Leung of Detoorp suggest using white vinegar without detergent to cut through residue and mineral deposits. After the vinegar wash, a hot cycle with baking soda can neutralize any remaining vinegar and restore the towels’ pH balance.
Scott Schrader from Cottage Care also advocates for the vinegar and baking soda method, emphasizing how vinegar dissolves residues and minerals in the first wash, while baking soda deodorizes and refreshes the fibers in the second wash.
Jared Sarbit of Picture Perfect Cleaning and Jessica Gonzalez of Sparkly Maid San Antonio also endorse the use of white vinegar to revitalize hard towels. Gonzalez specifically recommends washing towels with one cup of vinegar on a hot cycle, followed by a subsequent cycle with baking soda for further softening.
While optional, using baking soda in a subsequent cycle can help deodorize and enhance the softness of towels. However, experts agree that white vinegar is the essential step in restoring the fluffiness and softness of towels.
By following these expert tips, you can ensure that your towels stay plush and comfortable over time.
