Must Read

A woman was subjected to a violent sexual assault by a Tinder date, leaving her traumatized. Known as Sophie to protect her identity, she had consensual sex with Fearghall Mulgrew, a Queen’s University Belfast student, before he assaulted her by biting her face and body and engaging in non-consensual sexual acts.

The incident, which occurred in 2021, resulted in injuries and multiple bruises for Sophie. She sought help by self-referring to The Rowan, a sexual assault referral center in Northern Ireland, and reporting the incident to the Northern Irish police. In a court hearing on February 5 the following year at Laganside Court, Mulgrew, from Stewartstown, was convicted of sexual assault by penetration and five counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Mulgrew was sentenced to 22 months, with eight months to be served in custody, and was ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade. Sophie, speaking to BelfastLive, expressed her desire to inspire other sexual assault survivors to seek justice. Recounting the night of the assault, she revealed that Mulgrew disregarded their agreement on boundaries, engaging in rough and non-consensual behavior, including biting, choking, and physical harm.

After the traumatic experience, Sophie struggled with acceptance and emotional distress, but with support from her mother and mental health professionals, she gradually regained her strength. She emphasized the importance of seeking help and speaking out against sexual assault, highlighting the complexities of consent. Sophie commended the support she received from The Rowan center and the police during the investigation, acknowledging the challenging yet supportive process.

Reflecting on her journey of healing, Sophie expressed hope that sharing her story would empower others to come forward and seek assistance early on. She stressed the nuanced nature of consent and the significance of reporting incidents to achieve justice and prevent future harm.
