The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in approximately 250 postcodes across England and Wales today. This action follows winter weather warnings issued by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Eligible households, numbering over half a million, will receive £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
These payments have been initiated in 246 postcode areas, including regions such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. The list of postcodes qualifying for these payments has been released.
Cold Weather Payments are allocated to individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. A similar scheme operates in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, support for heating bills is provided annually without weather conditions playing a role.
In the current winter season, 697 postcode areas, including 18 districts experiencing prolonged cold weather, have received £25 payments. The latest round of payments will benefit an estimated 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for around 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure on Cold Weather Payments today is expected to reach £13.3 million.
In England and Wales, payments are triggered when temperatures are predicted to fall below zero for seven consecutive days. Forecasters anticipate a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures forecasted across many regions.
Approximately 3.9 million people are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million currently receiving Pensions Credit. Those receiving benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, Universal Credit, and others may be eligible for these payments, though eligibility criteria apply.
Payments of £25 are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days. Recipients will see the payment reference including their National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP.’ No application is required for these payments.
Various weather stations, including Rochdale, Rostherne, Hurn, Carlisle, Little Rissington, Keele, Llysdinam, Wittering, Shawbury, and Katesbridge in Northern Ireland, have triggered Cold Weather Payments for eligible households.
