“Aldi Named Most Economical UK Supermarket Again”

Must Read

Aldi has been recognized as the most economical supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocates at Which?. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and discloses the most budget-friendly stores each month. Throughout 2025, Aldi held the title of the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the fifth consecutive year, being the most cost-effective option in ten out of 12 months.

In December, Aldi claimed the top spot for affordability, with a total cost of £123.60 on average for a selection of 68 items. Lidl followed closely behind, costing just 10p more at £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members. Lidl managed to secure the position of the cheapest supermarket twice in 2025, specifically in July and October, with a mere 77p average monthly price difference compared to Aldi.

For the same set of 68 items, Asda registered an average cost of £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard holders paid £135.84, or £139.12 for non-Clubcard holders.

On the other hand, Sainsbury’s Nectar card users spent £141.45, or £143.74 without a Nectar card. Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket for the list of 68 items, totaling £170.46 in December. According to Which? research, Waitrose’s prices averaged 35% higher compared to Aldi throughout 2025.

Aldi and Lidl were excluded from a comparison involving 180 items due to their smaller product range. Asda led the affordability chart for the larger list, with an average bill of £450.82 in December.

Tesco Clubcard holders were projected to pay £462 on average in December, while non-Clubcard shoppers would face a bill of £493.53. Morrisons shoppers could expect to pay £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without one, while Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders would pay £468.61, and non-members would pay £501.89.

Waitrose also maintained its position as the most expensive supermarket for the larger shop, with an average bill amounting to £529.17. The analysis by Which? considered special offers and loyalty prices but excluded multibuys.

Reena Sewraz, the Retail Editor at Which?, highlighted Aldi’s consistent performance, underscoring its position as the UK’s most affordable supermarket for the fifth consecutive year. Sewraz also emphasized Asda as a viable option for shoppers seeking a broader range of branded products at competitive prices.

With food costs remaining a significant concern for many households, the advice is to shop around as selecting one supermarket over another could result in substantial savings over a year.
