Sir AP McCoy has shared his thoughts on the future plans for Constitution Hill, a talented jumps horse whose recent performances have been disappointing. Constitution Hill, who won the 2023 Champion Hurdle and had an unbeaten record in ten races under rules, faced setbacks at the Cheltenham Festival and subsequent events.
Despite high expectations, Constitution Hill fell early in the races at both the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National meeting at Aintree. His return at the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in Newcastle was also marred by a fall at the second hurdle. Trainer Nicky Henderson expressed confidence in Constitution Hill’s abilities after a summer evaluation.
Following the recent fall, Henderson dismissed the idea of retirement for Constitution Hill and is contemplating transitioning the horse to Flat racing. McCoy offered his insights on the horse’s performance, suggesting that despite the falls, Constitution Hill should continue racing over hurdles due to his talent and care he receives.
Barry Geraghty, another William Hill ambassador involved with Constitution Hill, proposed exploring rehab options for the horse’s jumping technique before making decisions on future racing strategies. Geraghty emphasized the importance of carefully considering the best course of action to ensure Constitution Hill’s successful career progression.
