Several top snooker players, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their views on a rule they believe needs to be revised in the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, these elite players were asked about the single change they would implement in snooker rules, and a particular regulation was consistently highlighted.
Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, among others, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a point of contention for top players. The current rule penalizes a player if they fail to make contact with the designated ball, resulting in a foul and a miss being called by the referee.
A miss is typically called when the referee perceives that a player opted for a more difficult shot instead of a simpler one to escape a snooker. It can also be enforced if a player underplays and misses a ball, indicating a lack of effort.
When a ‘foul and a miss’ is declared, the opponent of the offending player can choose to either reset the balls for a reattempt or leave them as they are on the table. Continuous ‘foul and a miss’ calls can lead to the player repeating the same shot indefinitely, while their opponent accumulates points without actively participating.
On the other hand, the ‘three-miss rule’ stipulates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball thrice in a row automatically concedes the frame to their opponent. This rule has been a subject of debate within the sport, with critics arguing its inconsistent enforcement, potential to slow down games, and confuse casual viewers.
When asked about potential game changes, O’Sullivan promptly pinpointed the miss rule, emphasizing the limitation to no more than three misses. Wilson echoed this sentiment, supporting the idea of restricting misses to three attempts.
Selby expressed his perspective on the issue by proposing a limit of three misses, highlighting instances where a player in the lead could win a frame due to their opponent’s repeated misses. He suggested revisiting this aspect of the game.
Former world champion Murphy took a different angle, criticizing how the miss rule could be exploited by players to their advantage. He specifically mentioned his disapproval of the foul and a miss rule, highlighting its potential for deliberate fouls in gameplay.
Additionally, current world number three Neil Robertson suggested a potential modification by proposing that if a player fails to make contact with a directly visible red ball, their opponent should receive a free ball. This adjustment aims to expedite the pace of the game significantly.
Apart from addressing the miss rule, snooker’s top players also brought attention to the conventional dress code in the sport. Many players feel that the mandatory attire of long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear should be relaxed to align with modern preferences and comfort.
When asked about his desired changes, Mark Allen emphasized the need to relax the dress code. Similarly, Luca Brecel listed the dress code, shot clock implementation, and the requirement to always hit a cushion as his top three areas for potential adjustments in the sport.
