Roughly half a year after retiring from professional football, Marc-Antoine Dequoy has returned to the field, this time competing for a football championship with the Canadian men’s team in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy, a 31-year-old safety, bid farewell to the CFL in February after a successful five-season stint with the Montreal Alouettes.
“I felt my football journey had come to a physical end,” explained Dequoy. “Committing to a full CFL season of 18 games, including off-season training and camp, was a challenge my body couldn’t meet. I had to be honest with myself and acknowledge when it was time to step back.”
Although initially hesitant about flag football, Dequoy eventually embraced the opportunity after consulting with friends and trying out the game. He temporarily paused his football pursuits to co-host a television show from March to May, before realizing his passion for competition was still burning.
Having achieved CFL accolades, including being twice named an all-star and winning the Grey Cup in 2023, Dequoy found the transition to flag football to be a unique challenge. The game’s smaller field dimensions and rules prohibiting physical contact posed new obstacles for the seasoned player.
Canada’s participation in the IFAF world flag football championship was affected by Nigeria’s withdrawal due to visa issues, leading to a revised schedule for the remaining teams. With Olympic berths at stake for the top finishers, Dequoy emphasized the team’s focus on securing a spot in the upcoming Games.
As the competition unfolds in Germany, Dequoy and his teammates are driven by the prospect of Olympic qualification, a dream that was once distant but now within reach thanks to the evolution of football as an Olympic sport.
