Canadian filmmaker Ally Pankiw announced on Thursday that she rejected an opportunity to direct the upcoming television series based on the “Harry Potter” franchise, citing a stance against supporting transphobia.
In a shared Instagram conversation, Pankiw unequivocally declined the offer to work on the upcoming HBO production, emphasizing her firm stance against funding projects that perpetuate transphobia.
Known for directing episodes of “Black Mirror” and the series “Feel Good,” along with the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw underscored the significance of standing against discriminatory content in her post.
Scheduled for release on Dec. 25, 2026, on HBO Max, the new series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is an adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved fantasy book series. The show will be available for streaming on Crave in Canada.
Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues have led to criticism, with the author publicly expressing opinions that have sparked debates and divided opinions among fans and industry professionals. Notably, Rowling has defended her stance on gender and sex, leading to ongoing discussions regarding her association with the “Harry Potter” universe.
Furthermore, director Kate Herron also disclosed her refusal to engage with the series, echoing Pankiw’s sentiments of standing against potential transphobic content. Herron, recognized for her work on “Loki” and other popular series, emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity in the projects one chooses to be involved with.
At present, there has been no official response from Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO, regarding the impact of such refusals on the production of the “Harry Potter” series. Requests for additional comments from Pankiw’s representatives remain unanswered.
