“Mathematician Solves Tie-Breaker Dilemma with Innovative Dice”

A mathematician named Eric Harshbarger was presented with a challenge during a gaming convention in 2012. A board game designer asked him to create dice that could determine the starting player without the possibility of a tie. The goal was to expedite the game setup process.

Harshbarger, a senior lecturer at Auburn University in Alabama, found the problem intriguing as it lacked an obvious solution, which piqued his mathematical interest. While he devised theoretical dice that could ensure a fair outcome, creating functional dice proved to be a complex task.

After almost 15 years of collaborative research involving around 20 scientists and mathematicians worldwide, Harshbarger and his team successfully developed a set of Go First Dice for five players. These dice guarantee a clear winner from a single roll, resolving the longstanding issue of tie-breakers in board games.

Initially, the team created a set of four 12-sided dice for two, three, or four players, providing statistically fair outcomes. However, designing dice for five players proved to be a significant challenge. The researchers explored various theories and geometries to achieve a feasible solution, ultimately settling on a set of five 120-sided dice.

The breakthrough came when a Canadian software engineer named Paul Meyer joined the project. Meyer utilized mathematical patterns and computational methods to devise a solution using five 60-sided dice. This discovery, after years of effort, validated the team’s persistence in solving the dice dilemma.

Despite some skepticism regarding the practical implementation of the dice, Harshbarger asserts the mathematical integrity of their design. As the research continues, the team explores the possibility of using fewer sides for a five-player set and expanding the concept to accommodate six players.

Harshbarger acknowledges the unpredictable nature of mathematical challenges, emphasizing the allure of pursuing complex problems with no apparent solution. The ongoing research signifies a dedication to pushing the boundaries of mathematical theory and game design.
