“Western Canada Embraces Permanent Daylight Time Trend”

Must Read

Western Canada is following the trend of ditching daylight saving time, with Manitoba being the latest province to make the switch, joining B.C., Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Saskatchewan in abandoning the practice. This shift has altered the time zone landscape in Canada. Manitoba’s decision to stick to daylight time simplifies life for its residents but creates a unique time zone quirk for a small part of Ontario. Northwestern Ontario, including Kenora, will now be in its own time zone during the winter, one hour behind Thunder Bay to the east and Winnipeg to the west.

Ontario is not the only province with multiple time zones. The East Kootenay region in B.C. will align its time with Alberta, and Labrador observes Atlantic time. Nunavut spans three time zones. In 2020, Ontario passed a law to end the biannual clock changes, contingent on Quebec and New York doing the same. While Quebec has not made any changes, Nunavik has transitioned to permanent daylight time.

In the U.S., the House of Representatives approved a bill to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, awaiting Senate approval. Similarly, the New York state Senate is contemplating a similar change.
