“Over 50% of UK Dogs Overweight: Experts Warn of Health Risks”

Must Read

Britain is currently grappling with a concerning animal welfare issue, as more than 50% of dogs are now overweight or obese, which experts warn can reduce a pet’s lifespan by up to two years. Veterinary organizations, including the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, have officially categorized canine obesity as a chronic, progressive, and preventable disease. They emphasize that excessive weight is not merely a cosmetic concern but a significant health risk, leading to joint pain, arthritis, injuries, diabetes, breathing problems, and heart issues, ultimately impacting the dogs’ mobility, quality of life, and longevity.

According to Angela Day, a prominent UK canine rehabilitation specialist and educator, having an overweight dog is a welfare problem that many owners overlook until it starts causing harm. Extra weight strains the joints, organs, and heart, potentially shortening a dog’s life significantly. However, Angela highlights that obesity is avoidable, and with the right measures, owners can ensure their pets lead healthier, longer, and happier lives. One challenge is that owners often fail to recognize weight gain in their dogs due to fur, feeding routines, and breed characteristics concealing the issue.

Certain dog breeds face a higher risk, with studies revealing that approximately 25% of Labradors carry a gene mutation known as POMC, making them constantly hungry and slowing their metabolism. This genetic variation results in fewer calories burned and faster weight gain, complicating weight management efforts.

Angela emphasizes that simple adjustments at home can be life-saving for dogs struggling with obesity. She shares four essential tips for owners, stressing that it is not about depriving their dogs but about offering them the best opportunity for a long, pain-free, and active life.
