A trip to Lapland is a dream for many children, but the sight of the Northern Lights left a group of adults in awe during a visit to northern Sweden. Witnessing this natural phenomenon on two consecutive nights was a stroke of luck, making the experience truly unforgettable.
Each day was filled with unique activities, such as dog sledding, snowshoe hiking, fire-building lessons, encounters with the indigenous Sámi people and their reindeer, and even a refreshing dip into the Bothnian Sea wearing survival suits.
Located in the Arctic region of northern Scandinavia, Lapland boasts stunning landscapes with Luleå being the largest city, just a short flight away from Stockholm. The opportunity to witness the aurora borealis extends from early August to late April, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -30°C from December to February.
Accommodations included a stay at Brändön Lodge, situated on the edge of the Bothnian Sea near Luleå Airport. This lodge offers 15 cabins overlooking the Luleå archipelago, providing a cozy base for exploration with provided snow gear. The lodge features various amenities, including a restaurant, bar, sauna cabins, and relaxation areas.
Another night was spent at the eco-lodge Arctic Retreat in Överstbyn, where guests can relax in luxury log cabins with outdoor hot tubs and indoor fireplaces. Dining experiences ranged from a unique meal in a garden shed across a frozen bay to cooking reindeer over an open fire in teepees.
The culinary offerings in Lapland are diverse, featuring fresh fish, meatballs, reindeer, elk, moose, lingonberries, and options for vegan and vegetarian diets. Guests also had the chance to try freshly caught and smoked perch from ice fishing, under the guidance of a knowledgeable local guide.
Activities included snowshoe hikes, cultural exchanges with the Sámi people, visits to reindeer and husky farms, and a thrilling ice bath experience at the Arctic Bath on the Luleå River. For the adventurous, the Polar Explorer Icebreaker offered a unique opportunity to cruise the Bothnian Sea and even swim in the icy waters wearing a survival suit.
The magical experience of witnessing the Northern Lights, with their vibrant colors lighting up the sky, was a highlight of the trip, resembling a scene from a fairytale. Swedish Lapland truly lived up to its reputation as a mystical and enchanting destination.
