Broadway Star Billy Porter Withdraws from Cabaret Role

Must Read

Billy Porter has had to withdraw from his role in Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club due to a severe health condition. The actor has been diagnosed with a serious case of sepsis, as confirmed by the show’s producers.

As a result of his illness, the 55-year-old will not be able to participate in the production while he focuses on following medical advice for his recovery. Although Porter is expected to fully recover, he will no longer be continuing his role as the Emcee, leading to an early conclusion of the show’s run.

The New York Times reported that Porter’s doctors are optimistic about his recovery but have recommended a period of rest in the coming weeks. Adam Speers, a producer with ATG Productions, commended Porter for his exceptional work on the show and expressed regret over the decision to end the Broadway run prematurely.

Originally scheduled to perform until October 19, Porter’s departure has prompted the show to conclude ahead of schedule. Marty Lauter and David Merino will step in as alternates for the Emcee role for the remaining shows, while Marisha Wallace will continue portraying Sally Bowles until the end of the run.

Porter had previously expressed gratitude for his role in Cabaret, considering it a gift and a blessing, especially after facing rejection during a 1998 revival audition. Since its debut in April 2024, Cabaret has featured 18 preview performances and 592 regular shows.

This health setback follows Porter’s recent withdrawal from a performance at Manchester Pride due to illness, as announced by event organizers. Fans and colleagues have sent well wishes for his speedy recovery during this challenging time.
