A significant transition is occurring this year that may impact the accessibility of data on certain devices. The UK is phasing out its 3G service to enhance the speed and reliability of 4G and 5G networks. Major UK carriers like EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already discontinued their 3G service.
While most users won’t be affected since their devices do not rely on 3G for data connectivity, older and more vulnerable individuals might face disruptions if they have not upgraded to newer devices yet.
This move raises concerns as many individuals depend on their phones to stay connected with loved ones.
To address these challenges, Virgin Media O2 has partnered with Age UK to raise awareness about the ongoing 3G network shutdown in the UK.
Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, emphasized the importance of supporting those affected by the 3G transition, particularly older individuals who may find it overwhelming.
O2 is set to complete the 3G shutdown by the end of the year, meaning users with non-4G or 5G compatible devices will lose access to services like WhatsApp.
The decommissioning process has already commenced, starting with Durham as the first town where O2 ceased 3G services. Subsequent shutdowns have occurred in Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, with Torquay next in line before the entire network closure before year-end.
Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to provide additional assistance to older mobile phone users needing to upgrade their devices to adapt to the post-3G era.
Age UK will support disadvantaged older individuals by conducting in-person awareness sessions to help them navigate the transition.
These services will also be extended to older customers and users of providers such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile, which operate on the O2 network.
If you are unsure about how the 3G shutdown will affect you, Virgin Media O2 will directly contact customers without 4G or 5G devices, offering free compatible devices to vulnerable users and discounts on new handsets for others.
For those with 3G-only devices, they can still use 2G networks for voice calls and text messaging after the 3G sunset.
Virgin Media O2 assures that the impact of the 3G shutdown will be minimal since its 3G network handles less than 2% of total network data.
To address concerns or seek assistance, individuals can reach out to their providers for guidance on readiness for the transition, or contact Age
