“Freely to Challenge Sky with Free Live TV Box”

Must Read

Sky currently provides various TV streaming options, such as its Glass TV and Stream box, offering access to premium channels and personalized recommendations. However, a new competitor is emerging in the market that may challenge Sky’s dominance.

Freely, launched last year, allows UK households to stream live TV for free through compatible smart TVs. By connecting to the internet, these TVs can access live channels via broadband without the need for an aerial.

Previously, using Freely required purchasing a new TV, but a new development is set to change that. Freely, under the same team as Freeview, is introducing a set-top box manufactured by Netgem. This device will be available later this year, providing access to over 40 live channels without requiring an aerial.

The Freely box will offer features like a full TV guide, Mini Guide for current and upcoming programs, viewing recommendations, live TV pause functionality, and a seven-day backward and forward viewing option. It will also receive regular updates for evolving features and content.

Unlike Sky’s subscription model, Freely’s device offers free access to all content post-purchase. Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, expressed the goal of making free TV accessible to all through the plug-and-stream devices. Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., highlighted the innovation’s impact on enhancing the TV viewing experience over Wi-Fi at an affordable price.
