Professional darts player Gerwyn Price had to pull out of the Flanders Darts Trophy due to an infected hand. The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) confirmed his withdrawal on social media and mentioned that no replacement would be added to the ongoing tournament.
As a result of Price’s absence, Ryan Joyce was granted a bye to the third round after his scheduled opponent, Ricardo Pietreczko, also advanced without playing due to Price’s withdrawal. Joyce secured his spot in the next round after a close 6-5 victory against his German competitor.
Earlier, Price had shared a picture of his inflamed hand on social media after a hospital visit. He later informed his followers that he was not fit to compete in the Antwerp tournament, expressing hope to recover in time for the following weekend.
Several other prominent players like Luke Humphries, Nathan Aspinall, and Gary Anderson decided to skip the event. However, Luke Littler, despite undergoing emergency dental treatment, remained in the competition.
Littler, who received a bye to the second round as one of the top 16 seeds, is set to face Dylan Slevin. The evening session will also feature a match between Michael van Gerwen and Gian van Veen. Schweyen’s defeat opened the door for Slevin to challenge the reigning world champion.
Belgian hopefuls Kim Huybrechts, Mario Vandenbogaerde, and Mike De Decker also progressed in the tournament, enhancing the chances of a Belgian champion in Antwerp. The event showcases legendary players as anticipation builds for the upcoming clash between Europe and the USA in New York.
