Angela Rayner Resigns Over Stamp Duty Error

Must Read

Angela Rayner has stepped down from her government position, informing Keir Starmer that she takes full responsibility for her mistake regarding stamp duty. The Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary faced a crisis after acknowledging an underpayment of tax on a seaside flat she purchased in Hove, Sussex. Rayner admitted to the error, stating it was unintentional but acknowledged her failure to meet the highest standards in her recent property transaction.

Following her self-report to the independent standards advisor, a report was presented to the Prime Minister earlier today. The ethics watchdog, Sir Laurie Magnus, commended Rayner for her integrity and dedication to public service but found that she had breached the ministerial code in relation to her tax affairs.

In her resignation to the Prime Minister, Rayner also announced stepping down as the deputy leader of the Labour Party, triggering an election for her replacement. Reflecting on her journey from a council estate in Stockport to the highest levels of government, Rayner expressed pride in serving and advocating for working-class communities, emphasizing her commitment to making a difference in people’s lives.

Rayner addressed Keir Starmer, thanking him for his support and explaining her decision to refer herself for investigation after realizing an inadvertent error in paying the incorrect rate for Stamp Duty Land Tax. Despite acting in good faith throughout, she admitted to not seeking specialized tax advice due to her roles and family complexities, taking full accountability for the oversight.

Citing the media pressure’s toll on her family and the need to prioritize their well-being, Rayner made the difficult choice to resign from her government positions and party leadership. She highlighted her efforts in government, including advancing workers’ rights, renters’ protections, housing investments, devolution initiatives, and various social reforms for the benefit of the people.

Rayner expressed gratitude to her colleagues and team for their dedication and collaboration in serving the public interest. She affirmed her commitment to continuing to contribute to the party and the country in the future, guided by her passion for creating positive change.
