“BT’s Openreach Mandates Transition to Digital Voice Calling”

Must Read

The traditional landline phone system is gradually being replaced by modern digital calling technology, utilizing the internet instead of conventional copper wires. Millions of households have already transitioned to broadband technology, and an additional 137 locations are now making the shift away from outdated copper cables.

BT’s Openreach service has announced this update, mandating that millions of homes must adopt digital voice services when signing up for new broadband plans or switching providers. The implementation of a “Stop Sell” alert occurs when a significant number of homes near a broadband exchange gain access to ultrafast Full Fibre connectivity.

Once the “Stop Sell” directive is enforced, customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or modify their broadband or phone services will be required to opt for a new digital service over broadband. While homes without Full Fibre in their vicinity can continue using copper lines until fiber cables are installed in their area.

The move towards Digital Voice technology aims to enhance the calling experience for consumers, offering advanced features like Multi Call, conference calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile devices. Improved call quality is also a highlight of Digital Voice, necessitating a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.

The transition to Digital Voice is deemed crucial by BT to meet future communication demands, with concerns raised regarding older and vulnerable individuals lacking broadband access. Telecom companies and Ofcom are closely monitoring potential issues such as broadband outages impacting phone services.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Manager, emphasized the importance of the stop sell program in aligning the UK’s communication infrastructure with future requirements. The progression towards Full Fibre technology is seen as a strategic move to phase out the outdated copper network in favor of modern, future-proofed technologies, ensuring a seamless transition to a digital era.

“We’re moving towards a digital future, and Openreach is at the forefront of this transformation by deploying ultrafast, reliable, and future-proofed Full Fibre technology nationwide.”
