Dragons’ Den personality Deborah Meaden has expressed concerns that the investigation into Angela Rayner’s tax matters is diverting attention from more pressing issues. Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, is facing criticism for allegedly underpaying stamp duty by £40,000 on an £800,000 property purchase in Hove, claiming she acted on advice from her legal advisors. Following consultation with a senior barrister, Rayner realized the error and self-referred to the independent ministerial standards adviser for further review. Meaden, in a recent interview with LBC, defended Rayner but acknowledged uncertainty about her political future.
Meaden, with a net worth of £50 million, advocated for a fairer tax system that targets the wealthy to contribute more. She emphasized the importance of everyone, including affluent individuals and businesses, fulfilling their tax obligations to support public services and investment. Regarding government policies, Meaden praised Labour for addressing crucial business challenges but criticized certain decisions such as the National Insurance increase affecting employers. She highlighted the significance of proper plan implementation and patience in seeing the desired outcomes for small businesses.
Furthermore, Meaden dismissed speculations about her candidacy for London Mayor in 2028, clarifying that she is not pursuing the position due to her limited presence in the city. She emphasized the need for a qualified individual who can better address the necessary changes in London.
