Aldi is set to open 80 new stores in the next two years with a significant investment of £1.6 billion. Within the next 13 weeks, 21 new stores will be launched, including locations in Shoreditch, Durham, and Kirkintilloch. The supermarket has identified 20 priority locations for new sites, such as Bromley, Ealing, South Shields, and Witney.
Currently operating 1,060 stores in the UK, Aldi aims to expand to 1,500 stores, which will result in the creation of numerous job opportunities and increased business for British suppliers. The company’s financial report for the 12 months ending December 2024 showed a rise in sales to £18.1 billion, although operating profit decreased to £435.5 million due to various factors such as customer price reductions, infrastructure investments, and higher staff wages.
Aldi has recently lowered prices on over 900 products and invested more than £300 million in price reductions since the beginning of 2025, particularly focusing on essential items like fruits, vegetables, bread, and dairy products. Additionally, the supermarket has raised store assistant wages twice this year, with a minimum hourly rate of £13.02 nationally and £14.35 within the M25 as of the beginning of the current month.
Giles Hurley, the Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing quality products at competitive prices. He highlighted Aldi’s dedication to offering everyday low prices without additional club memberships or marketing gimmicks. Aldi’s expansion plans align with its mission to make affordable groceries accessible to more communities, with a significant investment of £1.6 billion over the next two years to reach a larger customer base.
Aldi’s reputation as the most cost-effective supermarket was reaffirmed by Which? in a recent report, where a shopping basket of 75 items at Aldi was found to be cheaper on average compared to Lidl, even with the latter’s loyalty program. This price comparison included a mix of branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
