Numerous websites and applications are experiencing outages today due to a widespread Amazon Web Services (AWS) disruption. AWS, known for powering the backbone of various digital platforms, is currently encountering technical difficulties resulting in the malfunctioning of numerous online services.
Impacted services include popular platforms such as Snapchat, Slack, Ring, Signal, Virgin Media, BT, EE, and Sky, along with the websites and applications of major UK banks like Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. The HMRC website has also been affected by the outage.
AWS has acknowledged the issue’s potential cause and reports that most services are gradually returning to normal. A recent update states, “We are witnessing recovery across the majority of the impacted AWS Services. Global services and features dependent on US-EAST-1 have also been restored. We are actively working towards a complete resolution and will provide further updates as new information becomes available.”
Furthermore, Downdetector data revealed a significant surge in reports on Monday morning, with over 2,681 incidents related to AWS. An HMRC spokesperson mentioned that they are collaborating urgently with AWS to address the global issues affecting online services and advised customers to contact them at a later time due to high call volumes.
Similarly, a representative from Lloyds Bank acknowledged the service disruptions caused by AWS and assured customers of efforts to restore all services promptly.
