A lesser-known coastal town has been declared the top destination in the UK, despite lacking traditional seaside attractions like arcades and amusement rides.
While popular UK seaside towns typically offer entertainment and piers, a new location has emerged as the country’s best coastal spot. Aldeburgh in Suffolk has taken the spotlight, trading arcades and rides for charming rows of pastel-colored homes and a rich historical background. This shift comes after reports highlighting a small fishing village in the UK renowned for its exceptional seafood but visited by few tourists.
Formerly a hub for building famous ships such as Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind, Aldeburgh still echoes its illustrious past. The town, granted borough status by Henry VIII during the Tudor era, now hosts the annual Aldeburgh Festival of music and arts, catering to history and literature enthusiasts seeking a different kind of amusement.
Aldeburgh’s quaint streets are lined with boutique clothing stores, independent shops, and antique shops. Culinary enthusiasts can savor classic fish and chips while exploring Michelin Guide-rated dining spots. Notably, the Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop has previously been recognized as the best chippie in Britain.
Referred to as “London-on-Sea,” Aldeburgh’s prime location between the River Alde and the English coastline overlooking the North Sea attracts visitors with its pebble beach, historic watchtower, and colorful 19th-century holiday villas. The town’s shingle beach, recognized as one of the top five in the country, boasts numerous accolades, including a prestigious Blue Flag.
Named the best seaside destination by The Times, Aldeburgh is praised for its picturesque portrayal of the traditional English seaside, with wooden shacks, bathing huts, and leisurely promenade strolls. Other notable locations on the list include Oban in Scotland, Cromer in Norfolk, Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria, and Penzance in Cornwall, alongside popular destinations like Brighton and Margate.
Traveling to Aldeburgh is convenient, with quick and frequent train services from London or an easy drive via the A12, taking less than three hours from the capital.
