If you own an Android device, it is advisable to ensure you have the latest update from Google installed. Recently, Google announced the release of a crucial security patch that addresses a significant vulnerability present on numerous new smartphones.
This concerning bug impacts specific Dolby audio components and, if present, could enable hackers to execute malicious code through simple audio files.
Google initially addressed this issue on its Android devices last month, but now a broader release is available, intended for all Android phones to safeguard against this threat.
Adam Boynton, the Senior Security Strategy Manager EMEIA at Jamf, emphasized the importance of the security bulletin released by Google, stating that it tackles a severe and persistent flaw that Android users should take seriously. This vulnerability, identified in 2025, has now been rectified at the Android platform level.
The vulnerability, labeled CVE-2025-54957, resides in Dolby’s DD+ (Dolby Digital Plus) Unified Decoder, allowing attackers to execute malicious code. Particularly on Android OS, audio attachments and voice messages are locally decoded, enabling exploitation without user interaction.
In light of this recent alert, it is recommended to check and ensure that your phone’s settings are up to date. While iPhones are not affected by this specific issue, Apple users are also advised to check for updates promptly to ensure the security of their personal data.
Boynton stressed the significance of regular patching as a key strategy to mitigate mobile risks, regardless of using Android or iOS devices.
