Attention all Apple users: It is imperative to promptly update all your devices following a recent security alert. Oligo, a cybersecurity firm, has uncovered multiple vulnerabilities in Apple’s AirPlay technology that could potentially allow hackers to introduce harmful malware into phones, tablets, and laptops. Termed “AirBorne,” this attack poses a serious threat that should not be overlooked.
According to the Oligo team, the identified vulnerabilities and attack methods, collectively known as “AirBorne,” are capable of spreading through wireless networks or peer-to-peer connections. Once exploited, attackers can gain complete control over devices, using them as a launching point for further malicious activities.
For those unfamiliar, Apple’s AirPlay system facilitates wireless streaming of content to speakers and TVs via Wi-Fi. However, this convenient wireless feature has inadvertently provided an avenue for cybercriminals to compromise devices.
Fortunately, Apple has addressed all identified issues through software updates. It is crucial for all users to ensure their iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks are running the latest software versions.
Kaspersky’s Alanna Titterington highlighted the significance of these security flaws in Apple AirPlay, branding them as “AirBorne.” These vulnerabilities can be exploited individually or in combination to execute wireless attacks on various AirPlay-enabled hardware.
To safeguard against AirBorne attacks, it is essential to update all AirPlay-enabled devices. Users can easily check for pending downloads or verify if their devices are up to date by accessing Settings, then General, and selecting Software Update.
While the recent attack may sound alarming, users with the latest Apple updates are protected. Notably, a successful hack requires the cybercriminal to be on the same Wi-Fi network, making consumer vulnerability highly unlikely.
The risk of exploitation is slightly elevated when using public Wi-Fi networks, cautioned Titterington. Users can take additional precautions, such as disabling the AirPlay receiver when not in use, restricting AirPlay access, and adjusting settings to permit AirPlay only for the current user.
