Legendary actor Ray Brooks has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his family. The versatile actor, known for his roles in both Coronation Street and EastEnders, succumbed to a brief illness on Saturday, according to statements from his family to the BBC.
In addition to his television work, Brooks was renowned as the voice of Mr. Benn in the beloved 1970s children’s series. In a heartfelt statement, his sons Will and Tom acknowledged their father’s iconic portrayal of Mr. Benn, noting that fans often fondly recalled his famous catchphrase, “as if by magic!”
The animated series followed Mr. Benn’s whimsical adventures as he visited a costume shop, where he embarked on magical journeys after donning various outfits. Despite only producing 13 episodes, the show was a lasting success, being rerun biannually for over two decades.
