A British father experienced severe symptoms leading to his death after consuming undercooked chicken during his vacation at a luxurious hotel in Fuerteventura, as revealed in a recent inquest.
Leslie Green, aged 70, succumbed to salmonella poisoning while staying at the Occidental Jandia Playa resort, where he was celebrating his significant birthday with his family. He fell ill during the second week of their £2,300 holiday and was subsequently hospitalized in Spain. Complications arose, including kidney failure and sepsis, ultimately resulting in his passing four weeks later due to multi-organ failure.
The investigation concluded that the cause of death was food poisoning from partially cooked chicken that Leslie had eaten while on vacation. His symptoms, starting on October 9 of the previous year, included diarrhea leading to dehydration.
Julie, Leslie’s wife of 38 years, raised concerns about the quality of the food they consumed at the resort, mentioning lukewarm carbonara sauce and undercooked chicken in particular. She noted lapses in food handling practices at the hotel buffet, where freshly cooked food was mixed with older items. Julie herself fell seriously ill with salmonella on her 60th birthday and spent a week in the hospital after also eating from the hotel buffet.
Leslie, who had been in an induced coma after falling ill following his milestone birthday, passed away on November 4, shortly after his life support was discontinued. His body was repatriated a week later. The Occidental Jandia Playa resort has not yet provided a comment on the incident.
Salmonellosis, caused by salmonella bacteria ingestion, typically manifests symptoms within 12 to 72 hours after exposure.
