“British Police Launch Largest Corruption Crackdown Since Al Capone”

Must Read

In what is being hailed as the largest crackdown on police corruption in British history, over 1,400 officers and staff are being targeted using strategies reminiscent of those that brought down notorious US gangster Al Capone.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes revealed that detectives are employing tactics similar to those used against Al Capone by Chicago police. Al Capone, who had evaded murder charges, was ultimately arrested in 1929 for carrying a concealed weapon and later convicted of tax evasion.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Jukes emphasized the comprehensive approach being taken to combat organized criminal activities within the police force. He highlighted the scrutiny being placed on various aspects such as sick leave, complaints, and monitoring of officers’ use of resources to identify individuals with questionable behavior.

The recent suspension of nine officers at scandal-plagued Charing Cross police station due to allegations of racism and misogyny underscores the ongoing efforts to clean up the force following the tragic murder of Sarah Everard by serving officer Wayne Couzens.

The purge, initiated in the aftermath of the Everard case, is the largest in the force’s history, with 1,442 personnel dismissed, resigned, or retired between 2022 and June 2025. Investigations are being conducted by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, which served as inspiration for the popular TV series “Line of Duty.”

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley highlighted the existence of “toxic or corrupt networks” resistant to change within the force. He confirmed that the current clearout surpasses previous efforts, including the significant purge of corrupt officers led by former Met Commissioner Sir Robert Mark in the 1970s.

As investigations continue, the entire custody team at Charing Cross police station is being disbanded. Additionally, arrests and charges have been made in connection with mishandling a sexual assault case. Efforts to reform the culture within the Met have been initiated to prevent the formation of power networks and address deep-rooted issues.
