Hollywood icon Bruce Willis’ children are dealing with the news of their father’s dementia diagnosis. His wife, Emma Heming, a prominent influencer and model, has been managing the reality of his condition, frontotemporal dementia, since the official diagnosis in 2023.
Despite still adjusting to their father’s illness, Heming mentioned that the family is coping as best as they can. The couple shares two daughters, Mabel Ray, 13, and Evelyn Penn, 11.
Initially, Heming noticed signs of a problem before the diagnosis but attributed some symptoms to Willis’ hearing loss from an injury during the filming of Die Hard in the 80s. Concerned about his troubling behavior and personality changes, they sought medical advice, leading to a 2022 diagnosis of aphasia, a condition affecting communication.
In a recent interview with Vogue Australia, Heming discussed the impact of Willis’ condition on their young children, acknowledging their struggle to cope with their father’s absence during important life moments. She emphasized the resilience of children but also shared the emotional toll on the family.
In her new book, The Unexpected Journey, Heming delves into the progression of Willis’ diagnosis and the significant changes in their family dynamics. She revealed the challenges of caregiving for someone with dementia, especially due to Willis’ communication difficulties.
Reflecting on the moment she learned about Willis’ diagnosis, Heming expressed the shock and emotional turmoil she experienced. She detailed the struggles of making decisions for Willis without his input due to his inability to communicate effectively.
Willis, who has three daughters with ex-wife Demi Moore, had previously attributed his behavior to hearing issues. However, as his condition worsened, Heming became suspicious that something more serious was affecting him.
In a previous interview, Willis had mentioned his hearing loss from a past accident, which sometimes led to miscommunication.
