“DWP Updates Guidelines for Universal Credit Parent Benefits”

Must Read

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has released updated guidelines regarding the process of applying for Universal Credit benefits if you are a parent.

On the official GOV.UK website, a new section has been added detailing the additional financial assistance available to individuals responsible for the care of children. For those with a first child born before April 6, 2017, a supplemental amount of £339 per month can be claimed under Universal Credit.

If the first child was born on or after April 6, 2017, or if there is a second child in the household, the additional monthly allowance is set at £292.81. Typically, no extra payments are provided for a third or subsequent child, although exceptions exist, such as receiving additional support for one child in the case of twins.

Any extra funds received will be disbursed until the child’s 16th birthday, with the possibility of continued payments until age 19 if the child is pursuing full-time education or approved training.

Additional financial support may be granted if any of the children are disabled, irrespective of the number of children in the household.

Regarding employment and Universal Credit eligibility, the information on GOV.UK explains that the main caregiver’s status and the child’s age play a crucial role. It is necessary to designate a primary caregiver, with single parents automatically assuming this role. While there is no work requirement when the youngest child is under one year old, individuals are generally expected to seek employment or prepare for work by the time the child turns 3.

If an individual is not the primary caregiver and is not employed full-time, they are typically expected to actively search for full-time employment.

Moreover, the GOV.UK page outlines the process for claiming reimbursement of up to 85% of childcare expenses for individuals working or planning to start working while receiving Universal Credit.

The maximum monthly reimbursement amounts are £1,031.88 for one child and £1,768.94 for two or more children. Eligible childcare services include registered providers like nurseries, preschools, after-school programs, childminders, nannies, and school holiday clubs.

Claims for childcare costs must be submitted through the Universal Credit account, allowing for reimbursement for up to three months of past childcare expenses.

To ensure timely reimbursement, it is advisable to report childcare expenses promptly after payment, as delaying for more than two months could result in a loss of reimbursement. Advance claims for future childcare, up to three months, are also possible, with reimbursement pending completion of the childcare services.

This information aims to provide clarity on claiming Universal Credit benefits for parents and caregivers, emphasizing the importance of understanding the support available and the procedures for accessing financial assistance.
