A former royal attendant has shared a remarkable incident where he discovered King Charles, then Prince of Wales, in an unusual situation wearing a silk robe stained with salad dressing.
The prince, who was married to the late Princess Diana from 1981 to 1996, was found by Paul Burrell, who served as Princess Diana’s butler for a decade until her tragic death in 1997. Burrell witnessed numerous episodes in the tumultuous relationship between Charles and Diana.
In his recent book, “The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King, and Princess Diana,” Burrell recounts the moment when he stumbled upon Charles dressed in a silk robe covered in salad dressing, with Diana absent from the scene. According to Burrell, this incident was a result of a heated argument between the royal couple, which often occurred during their time together.
Burrell describes Charles and Diana as contrasting personalities who struggled to maintain their failing marriage. Despite frequent explosive arguments, Burrell clarifies that their disagreements never turned physical. Diana’s frustration stemmed from Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles and his apparent disregard for her opinions.
The couple lived separately from 1986 and formally separated in 1992, a year marked by the breakdown of several royal marriages, including Charles and Diana, Princess Anne’s divorce, and Prince Andrew’s separation. The book by Paul Burrell, “The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King, and Princess Diana,” was released on Thursday, September 11.
