Three cities in England and a market town in Wales have been selected as finalists for the UK City of Culture 2025 title. Southampton, Bradford, Durham, and Wrexham, aiming to attain city status this year, are in the running for significant investment opportunities if chosen.
According to Arts Minister Lord Stephen Parkinson, the competition highlights the vital role culture plays in advancing towns, cities, and communities. He emphasized the positive impact witnessed in Coventry, this year’s host city, where over £172 million has been allocated to concerts, public art exhibitions, and new amenities.
A distinguished panel led by Sir Phil Redmond, known for creating the TV series Brookside, will tour the shortlisted locations before making their final recommendation. Redmond emphasized the transformative power of culture in driving economic and social progress, citing past successes in cities like Derry-Londonderry, Hull, and Coventry.
The 2025 City of Culture recipient will be revealed in May by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries. This competition is held once every four years.
