The agent, identified as Rebecca K, disclosed that she paid Brueckner’s £1,300 debt out of sympathy, concerned that his rights were being violated. This unexpected development may expedite Brueckner’s release, posing a challenge for investigators aiming to build a case against him.
Christian Brueckner has been under suspicion in the disappearance of Madeleine since 2020, although formal charges have not been filed against him. The outstanding fine was anticipated to delay his release, affording investigators crucial time to gather evidence. Rebecca K, a former member of the covert team monitoring Brueckner within Germany’s Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), equivalent to the FBI, saw her career derailed following disagreements with colleagues. Justifying her actions, she expressed compassion for Brueckner, citing concerns over potential human rights violations. Despite being aware of his criminal history as a rapist and pedophile, Rebecca K trusted Brueckner’s denial of the accusations relayed by his lawyer.
The fine stemmed from past offenses such as assault, forgery, and public intoxication. Initially deeming her decision to assist Brueckner a mistake, Rebecca K later confirmed her choice, facilitating his premature release.
