Bagging a lottery win can completely transform one’s life, paving the way for extravagant vacations, dream residences, and financial stability for future generations.
Nevertheless, for Carrie Edwards, a grandmother residing in Virginia, US, her recent lottery victory carries a unique significance. By correctly matching four of the initial five Powerball numbers alongside a crucial sixth number, she secured what would typically be a $50,000 (£37,000) prize. However, her decision to spend an extra dollar on the ticket tripled her final winnings.
Instead of keeping the £111,000 windfall to herself, Carrie opted to donate the entire sum to charities specializing in dementia research, food accessibility, and supporting military families.
Upon receiving a notification on her phone confirming her win, Carrie stated, “I knew I needed to give it all away. God is blessing me, so I can bless others.” Viewing her Powerball success as a gift meant to serve a greater purpose, she aspires to inspire others to follow suit and contribute their winnings to charitable causes.
“We all have a responsibility to assist one another in this lifetime,” she emphasized.
She divided her winnings equally, donating $50,000 to each of the Association Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD), Shalom Farms, and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, explaining, “These three organizations symbolize healing, service, and community.”
Representatives from these charities expressed no astonishment at Carrie’s generosity, citing her prior donations to their causes.
A lottery official remarked that it is exceedingly rare for winners to act in the manner that Carrie has chosen.
However, Carrie’s philanthropy is not unprecedented. In 2019, a woman from South Carolina who won a massive $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) Mega Millions jackpot donated millions to Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Alabama Red Cross for tornado relief.
Additionally, in 2013, Canadian winner Bob Erb, who claimed a $12 million prize (£8.9 million), generously left a $10,000 (£7.4k) tip for a restaurant owner whose daughter was battling cancer.
The likelihood of winning a Powerball prize stands at one in 24.9 million, while the chances of hitting the jackpot are a staggering one in 292.2 million.
Meanwhile, another lottery victor, Edwin Castro, experienced what is often referred to as the “lottery curse.” Accusations of ticket theft, arrests related to a luxury car scam involving his cousins, and the destruction of his extravagant $3.8 million (£2.8 million) Malibu mansion in the California wildfires added to his challenges.
