“Grotbags Actress Carol Lee Scott Remembered”

Must Read

In the 1980s, a popular children’s television catchphrase was “There’s somebody at the door! There’s somebody at the door!” This phrase was often joyfully shouted by kids when visitors arrived, accompanied by the antics of a whimsical green witch, a peculiar pink windmill filled with children, and the well-known duo of Rod Hull and Emu.

The source of this memorable catchphrase was the ITV show Emu’s World, featuring the infamous green witch named Grotbags, portrayed by actress Carol Lee Scott. Grotbags, with her flowing cape, resided in Gloomy Fortress and tried to use her magical powers over children, all while managing her minion Croc with her bazazzer wand.

Carol Lee Scott, born in Somerset in 1942, kickstarted her career in London by singing in local pubs and working in a music shop. She entertained guests at Pontins for 19 years and performed in working men’s clubs. Carol’s television debut happened in 1982 on Emu’s World, where she joined Rod Hull, leading to several series of the show.

In subsequent years, Carol voiced a spin-off, Rod ‘n’ Emu, and starred in her self-titled TV program and Emu’s All Live Pink Windmill Show. Tragically, she lost her battle with cancer on July 4, 2017, at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy in the entertainment industry.

After her passing, Carol’s niece Gina Mear announced on Twitter her aunt’s death, sparking an outpouring of tributes from fans. Many remembered Carol’s portrayal of Grotbags fondly, with some expressing sadness at her passing and praising her acting skills.

The entertainment community came together to support Carol Lee Scott’s family during this difficult time, with condolences and memories shared by many. Notably, comedian Rufus Hound offered his sympathies, recognizing Carol as an icon for his generation.

In a poignant reminder, the late Rod Hull, who met a tragic end in 1999, would have turned 90 on August 13, the following week.
