Heathrow Airport Faces Delays Amid Cyberattack

Must Read

Heathrow Airport provided an update following delays experienced by passengers due to issues with the check-in and boarding systems yesterday.

Passengers faced significant delays over the weekend as a cyberattack on a service provider caused disruptions. Technical problems were identified as the cause of potential delays for travelers.

The disruption started on Friday evening and persisted through Saturday, resulting in flight cancellations and delays as affected airlines had to resort to manual check-in and boarding procedures.

British Airways at Terminal 5 was unaffected and operated normally, while about 14 flights were canceled and others delayed at the other terminals on Saturday due to the technical glitch.

Collins Aerospace, the service provider, acknowledged the issue on Saturday and assured that efforts were underway to resolve it promptly. The disruption mainly impacted electronic check-in and baggage drop services, with manual operations being used to mitigate the situation.

Heathrow Airport’s website issued a notice for Sunday, September 21, updating passengers on the ongoing efforts to recover from the previous day’s system outage, advising travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

The cyberattack on the service provider also affected check-in operations at various European airports, including Brussels Airport, with flight cancellations anticipated. The service provider is actively working to address the issue swiftly.

The European Commission stated that it is closely monitoring the cyber attack that affected airline operations globally but reassured that aviation safety and air traffic control were not compromised. Cooperation with relevant entities is ongoing to restore operations and support affected passengers.
