A recently married couple had to end their honeymoon early as their cherished pet dog was fatally attacked by another dog at a boarding facility. Kimberley and Ethan Stevenson were vacationing in Majorca when they received the heartbreaking news that their two-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Hugo, had been mauled to death at Furry Tales Durham boarding home.
Despite efforts by veterinarians, Hugo could not be saved and passed away on September 4. Kimberley shared that they dropped Hugo off on September 1, only to receive a call three days later informing them of his demise.
Describing Hugo as a loving and playful dog who enjoyed interacting with everyone, Kimberley recounted how the incident unfolded at the licensed dog boarding home. She mentioned that a brown Labrador crossbreed escaped its enclosure and viciously attacked Hugo by the throat.
The boarding home’s owner expressed regret over the incident and extended support to the grieving couple, who reported the attack to the authorities. However, they were disheartened to learn that the police could not pursue the matter further as it was considered a civil issue.
In response to the tragedy, the couple, who tied the knot in April, launched a petition advocating for equal legal treatment of dog-on-dog attacks compared to dog-on-human assaults. They emphasized the need for thorough investigations into such incidents, accountability for owners of aggressive dogs, mandatory training for such animals, and enforcement of containment measures.
Durham County Council’s business compliance manager, Ian Harrison, conveyed condolences to the couple and assured that they are collaborating with the boarding facility to address the situation. Furry Tales Durham was contacted for a statement regarding the incident. The couple’s petition for stricter penalties in cases of dog attacks can be accessed via Change.org.
