A well-traveled individual recently came across an abandoned McDonald’s restaurant in a remote area of the United States. Chris, an American content creator with a passion for exploring different countries, shared a video on social media showcasing his adventure through the deserted establishment.
Located in Adak, Alaska, this McDonald’s outlet was left vacant in 1994. Despite being boarded up in certain areas, remnants of the iconic red, sloping roof characteristic of McDonald’s from the 1990s can still be recognized. The property, surrounded by overgrown grass, remains relatively intact with the drive-thru menu board displaying prices.
Chris explained that Adak, once home to a military base with a peak population of 6,000 residents, saw the opening of this McDonald’s in 1986 to cater to the base’s inhabitants. However, the restaurant was shut down following the decommissioning of the base in the 1990s, with the TikTok video also revealing abandoned suburban houses in the vicinity.
The intrepid traveler highlighted that the abandoned McDonald’s appears frozen in time, with exterior features and drive-thru windows left untouched. Notably, the drive-thru menu board showed prices from the past, including a Big Mac for $2.45 (£1.82) and Happy Meal toys based on the children’s TV series Bobby’s World from the 1990s.
The menu displayed various prices for items such as Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish burger, cheeseburger, hamburger, Breakfast Burrito, and Egg McMuffin, offering a glimpse into the past dining experience. Chris referred to this remote McDonald’s as the “loneliest McDonald’s in the world,” situated on an island between Alaska and Russia, accessible only through a four-hour bi-weekly flight from Anchorage.
Describing the eerie nostalgia of the 1990s exuded by the site, the video posted by Chris has attracted significant attention, amassing 587,700 views, 16,600 likes, and over 100 comments from intrigued viewers reminiscing about the past prices and the unique setting of the abandoned restaurant.
